Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient thyroid hormone. This results in constipation, dry skin, fatigue and depression. Hypothyroidism can slow down growth and development in children.

Hyperthyroidism

This is when the thyroid gland produces excess thyroid hormone, resulting in weight loss, fast heart rate and sweating. One of the most common causes of hyperthyroidism is Grave’s disease, an autoimmune disorder.

Hypopituitarism

Hypopituitarism is a disorder where the pituitary gland secretes little to no hormones. This in turn can result in a woman not getting her periods.

Testing for Endocrine Disorders

Symptoms of Endocrine disorders vary from person to person. One of the most common symptoms though are fatigue and weakness. By doing blood and urine tests your doctor can check your hormone levels to determine if you have an Endocrine Disorder. If you do have one, imaging tests might be required to locate the nodule or tumour.

Treatment for Endocrine Disorders

Treatment for Endocrine Disorders can be complicated and will vary from person to person depending on the type and severity of the disorder. Treatments include hormone replacement therapy, medication surgery and other treatments.

Treatment for Hypothyroidism

Thyroid Replacement Medication is a common treatment for Hypothyroidism. You might have to take the medication for the rest of your life to regulate your Thyroid hormones and have regular blood tests to check if the dosage of the medication needs to be adjusted.

Treatment for Hyperthyroidism

As for Hyperthyroidism, treatment options may include:

Antithyroid Medication to lower thyroid levels. This treatment can last a year or two, after which your doctor will review and determine the future course of action. In many cases, the Thyroid hormone levels tend to remain normal even after medication is discontinued.
Radioactive Iodine to target and destroy part of the thyroid gland (which in turn reduces the hormones produced). The Radioactive Iodine will only be absorbed by the thyroid and has no effect on the rest of your body. For most people, a single dose in the form of a liquid or a capsule is all it takes.
Surgery can be the recommended course of action in cases where the other two options might not work. Depending on your specific case, the doctor might suggest removing part or all of your thyroid gland.
